AUI Vice President for Programs

Associated Universities, Incorporated (AUI) is seeking a Vice President for Programs.  AUI is a not-for-profit research management organization that currently operates the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) under a Cooperative Agreement with the National Science Foundation (NSF) and is the North American Executive for building and operating the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA), an international astronomy facility under construction in Chile.  AUI is also involved with other research endeavors, including the Virtual Astronomical Observatory.  This position is located at our Corporate headquarters in Washington, D.C. and requires moderate amount of national and international travel.

 

The Vice President for Programs will report to the AUI President, AUI’s Chief Executive Officer. 

The responsibilities of the Vice President for Programs include:

  • Leading AUI long range planning, in consultation with the President and Trustees
  • Leading the development and acquisition of new research opportunities in which AUI could make significant contributions in accord with its mission and expertise.
  • Maintaining effective communications with relevant funding agencies and industry, as appropriate for new business development and current AUI activities.
  • Supporting the President and other Corporate Officers in their management oversight of AUI facilities, including budget and programmatic oversight, and directly interfacing with the facilities in strategic planning.
  • Providing primary direct management oversight, funding agency liaison, and/or programmatic review of selected AUI facilities, as directed by the AUI President
  • Supporting the President in fostering relationships with other U. S. institutions managing federally-funded research centers with the objective of coordinating advocacy on issues of common concern and relations with the appropriate sponsoring agencies.
  • Acting for the AUI President in other matters as requested

 

Applicants should have an advanced degree (preferably PhD) in a science discipline, and at least 7 – 10 years of experience in research management and program development.  Familiarity with federally-funded research facilities, experience working with the federal budget and an in depth understanding of policy processes is required.  Demonstrated experience with international research endeavors is desirable.
