Dr. Scott Ransom, NRAO, awarded the 2010 Helen B. Warner Prize for Astronomy

Associated Universities, Inc. is pleased to announce that Scott Ransom, Associate Astronomer at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory, managed by AUI for NSF, has been awarded the Helen B. Warner Prize for Astronomy.  The prize, announced at the January 2010 meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Washington, DC, is awarded for a significant early career contribution to observational or theoretical astronomy.

Dr. Ransom specializes in pulsar research, in particular, he searches for exotic pulsars (such as binary and/or millisecond pulsars), using their atomic clock-like rotational characteristics to probe as much basic physics or astrophysics of neutron stars as possible. Most of his research time goes towards exotic millisecond radio pulsars and their use as tools to probe basic physics, including testing gravitational theories, constraining the equation of state of matter at supra-nuclear density, and attempting to directly detect gravitational waves via a pulsar timing array.
