Term appointments may be made for tenure-track positions at the rank of Assistant Tenure Track Scientist and Associate Tenure Track Scientist.
- Assistant Tenure Track Scientists can have term appointments for up to four years (appointments can be made for terms of two to four years). No more than four years of full-time employment can be spent at this rank. If an Assistant Tenure Track Scientist is not promoted to an Associate Tenure Track Scientist, then a terminal appointment is given. At that time, the individual can apply for another position in the non-tenure track (e.g., indefinite term appointment or project appointment).
- Associate Tenure Track Scientists can have term appointments for up to three years (the term can be from one to three years and can be renewed on the basis of merit). Unless an extension is granted, an individual cannot be employed in the tenure track for longer than six years without being awarded tenure or given a terminal appointment. If a terminal appointment is given, the individual can apply for another position in the non-tenure track (e.g., indefinite term appointment or project appointment).
A term appointee may postpone tenure review because of program-related circumstances or because of serious health or family-related issues. Such requests must be made to and approved by the Research Center Director. Annual reports of all such approved requests shall be provided to the AUI President.
A term appointment, or renewal or extension thereof, shall not be revoked prior to the stated expiration date unless such action is required by contractual provisions of the sponsoring agency, by reason of financial exigency (such as termination or lack of funding under a contract, grant, or cooperative agreement), or for cause. In the case of financial exigency, every reasonable effort shall be made to continue the appointment in an appropriate organizational unit of the Research Center. Termination for cause may be effected only after a review by a Tenure Performance Review Committee (TPRC). Terminations in cases of financial exigency will be made only after consultation with a TPRC.
