As part its efforts to maintain effective interactions with constituent user communities, Research Centers shall establish programs to utilize the services of highly qualified scientists and engineers as Research Associates, Senior Research Associates, Research Fellows and Visiting Fellows. Each Research Center shall develop implementing policies and procedures further defining the terms and conditions under which such appointments will be made. Types of temporary appointments include:
- Research Associates — Appointments as Research Associates may be made to unaffiliated scientists and engineers who have recently received their doctoral degrees. These appointments are normally made for terms of one or two years with a maximum three-year term. At the expiration of a Research Associate’s appointment, the individual is expected to seek employment at another institution. However, Research Associates are eligible to compete for open staff positions at the Research Center.
- Senior Research Associates — Appointments as Senior Research Associates may be made to unaffiliated scientists and engineers in mid-career to afford them an opportunity to extend their research experience. These appointments are made for one- or two-year terms and are renewable for a total of three years. At the expiration of an appointment as Senior Research Associate, the individual is expected to seek employment at another institution. However, Senior Research Associates are eligible to compete for term or continuing appointments. Research Associate or Senior Research Associate appointments shall be revoked for cause only after a hearing before an institutional committee appointed by the Research Center Director. In the event of a termination for other than cause, as much advance notice as is reasonably possible will be given.
- Research Fellows — Appointments as Research Fellows may be made to individuals who have doctoral degrees and/or major training in the natural sciences or engineering. The purpose of these appointments is to prepare scientists and engineers for careers in specific fields based upon the general objectives of the sponsoring program at the AUI Research Center.
- Visiting Fellows — Visiting Fellows are post-doctoral trainees funded by external grants and are appointed in accordance with eligibility requirements established by grantor institutions and Research Centers. Visiting Fellows are expected to conduct research under the direction of members of the AUI scientific staff at a level that requires a doctorate degree or its equivalent. The primary purpose of these appointments is to give Fellows a specified period to supplement and broaden their research experience. Appointments may not exceed 12 months; however, they may be renewed for up to two additional 12 month periods. Visiting Fellows are not required to work for AUI or the grantor when their training programs are completed. Visiting Fellows are paid stipends from the grants provided to AUI for the training programs. They may also be given Guest or Research Collaborator appointments at the Research Center where the training programs are conducted. Visiting Fellows must execute patent agreements that include substantially the same conditions as those executed by Research Center employees.
