Types of Scientific Appointments


Research Centers shall develop a written criterion that, with the exception of an emeritus appointment, provides scientific staff with greater employment security according to their type of appointment. Written procedures shall describe the process by which a Research Center makes decisions regarding the types of appointments held by members of the scientific staff. At a minimum, the appointments shall include: Term Appointments, Project Appointments, Continuing Appointments, Tenure Appointments, and Emeritus Appointments.

All tenure-track scientists have term appointments. Non-tenure track Assistant and Associate Scientists have indefinite appointments or project appointments, and non-tenure-track scientists have indefinite appointments or may be granted continuing appointments. In exceptional cases, a Scientist with a continuing appointment may be awarded a tenure appointment at a specific Research Center. General descriptions of these appointments are outlined below:
