Professional Advancement Leave


Professional Advancement Leave may be granted to full-time scientists with tenure to allow them to further their scholarly pursuits to gain professional stature and to thereby increase their value to AUI.  Staff members are expected to return to AUI at the end of their leave. Credit for Professional Advancement Leave is earned by full-time Associate Scientists and Scientists at the rate of one month for each year of service (not including periods of Professional Advancement Leave) up to a maximum leave credit of 12 months.

The type of professional advancement leave depends on the nature of the work or study program undertaken. The three types of leave are as follows:

  • Full-Pay Salaried Leave. Full-Pay Salaried Leave may be granted for participation in research at other institutions and/or to provide periods for visiting scientific institutions, writing (e.g., books or other professional manuscripts), advanced training, etc., but is not intended for teaching.  Full-Pay Salaried Leave is normally limited to a period of between two and 12 months, not to exceed the employee’s accrued leave credit.
  • Half-Pay Salaried Leave. Half-Pay Salaried Leave may be granted for participation in research at other institutions, part-time teaching, writing, advanced training, participation in special projects, etc.  Half-Pay Salaried Leave is limited to periods of between four and 12 months, not to exceed the employee’s accrued leave credit.
  • Non-Salaried Leave. Non-Salaried Leave is granted for participation in research, teaching, or other activities under stipends, grants or fellowships.  Leave is limited to the employee’s accrued leave credit.

Fringe Benefits Status
The extent, if any, to which scientists using Professional Advancement Leave qualify for fringe benefits, and the extent, if any, to which they are required to make employee contributions to maintain their eligibility for benefits, will be determined by the Research Center and applied in a consistent manner among all persons within the various categories of Professional Advancement Leave.

Other Provisions
Under exceptional circumstances scientists using Professional Advancement Leave may be authorized by the Research Center Director to use Leave Without Pay to extend their time beyond their accrued Professional Advancement Leave credit. However, use of Leave Without Pay shall not extend the total leave period beyond 12 months.

Personal financial gain during the period of the Leave is not an objective. It is recognized that in some cases staff members will have expenses beyond those normally incurred during their regular service to AUI. The acceptance of fellowships, grants, etc., to offset those added expenses or the loss of salary is permitted.

An individual who does not qualify under this policy because of the terms of his/her appointment may, under special circumstances, be granted Leave for Professional Advancement with the approval of the scientist’s Research Center Director and the concurrence of the AUI President.
